Johnny Depp (Edward Scissorhands)

'Edward Scissorhands': Where Are They Now? (1)

Edward Scissorhands was born in the lab of an experimenting scientist who, unfortunately, dies before he can give his ward hands. Instead—as the movie's title suggests—Edward must go through life with scissor blades in place of fingers. When an Avon saleswoman named Peg finds him, it appears he might have found his home in suburbia, giving wild haircuts and falling in love with Peg's daughter, Kim.

What has Johnny Depp not done since Edward Scissorhands in 1990? A complete list of his film credits would be pages long, but some notable titles include What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), Blow (2001), Finding Neverland (2004), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Sweeney Todd (2007), Black Mass (2015) and that little-known Pirates of the Caribbean film series. He dated his Scissorhands costar Winona Ryder for four years. Following a 14-year relationship with Vanessa Paradis, he married Amber Heard, though they divorced two years later. Both accused the other of domestic abuse, with Depp suing Heard in 2022 for her allegations of sexual violence and Heard announcing she will settle the defamation claim after initially filing an appeal.

Winona Ryder (Kim)

'Edward Scissorhands': Where Are They Now? (2)

Kim is none-too-thrilled when her mother brings home a man with scissors instead of hands. In the beginning, she's a little frightened of Edward. Her boyfriend, Jim, isn't a fan either, but his jealousy-stemmed antics to ruin things for Edward begin to wear thin. When Edward creates an angel ice sculpture as a Christmas decoration, Kim dances in the falling shavings and starts to realize that maybe Edward's feelings aren't completely unrequited after all.

The '90s were definitely Ryder's heyday. After Edward Scissorhands, she starred in Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), The Age of Innocence (1993), Little Women (1994), Reality Bites (1994), Boys (1996), Alien: Resurrection (1997), and Girl, Interrupted (1999). She reached a whole new generation of fans in the 2010s as one of the stars of Netflix's megahit series Stranger Things.

Dianne Wiest (Peg)

'Edward Scissorhands': Where Are They Now? (3)

Peg Boggs is an Avon salesperson who doesn't know what she's getting into when she attempts to make a sales call at Edward's home. And yet, she rises to the occasion beautifully, taking the boy in and attempting to give him the best life possible.

Prior to Edward Scissorhands, Dianne Wiest was an Oscar-winning actress for Woody Allen's 1986 film Hannah and Her Sisters. After her role as Peg, she did another Allen film in 1994, Bullets Over Broadway, and won her second Oscar. She has since starred in The Birdcage (1996), NBC's 2000 miniseries The 10th Kingdom, early-2000s episodes of , Dan in Real Life (2007), Rabbit Hole (2010), The Odd Life of Timothy Green (2012), and Sisters (2015). She was a series regular on the CBS sitcom Life in Pieces and the Paramount+ drama Mayor of Kingstown.

Anthony Michael Hall (Jim)

'Edward Scissorhands': Where Are They Now? (4)

Jim's role can be summed up quickly as that of a jealous boyfriend. Things are going swimmingly for him until Edward comes along and steals some of Kim's attention—and he'll do just about anything to get it back. Jim takes advantage of Edward's naiveté to convince him to use his scissors to aid Jim in a burglary. In the end, however, this backfires on Jim more than it does on Edward. The good-hearted Kim is not a fan of his scheming.

Anthony Michael Hall has played a variety of roles since his Scissorhands days, although his most notable ones may still be for Sixteen Candles (1984) and The Breakfast Club (1985). In subsequent years, he's appeared in All About the Benjamins (2002), on USA's The Dead Zone throughout the 2000s, and in The Dark Knight (2008). He also picked up a late-2000s arc on Community, appeared as Mr. Hart in MTV's Awkward, and hit the big screen in 2014's Foxcatcher and 2021's Halloween Kills.

Kathy Baker (Joyce)

'Edward Scissorhands': Where Are They Now? (5)

Joyce is a housewife in suburbia who suggests that Edward open a salon with her, although it very quickly becomes clear that it's not his knack for trimming hair that interests her. When she unsuccessfully attempts to seduce Edward, she becomes angry. She later becomes the leader of the hate mob against Edward.

Baker has been busy post-Scissorhands as well. Her most notable projects include Picket Fences (for which she won three Emmys), Cold Mountain (2003), 13 Going on 30 (2004), The Jane Austen Book Club (2007), The Age of Adaline (2015), and The Art of Racing in the Rain (2019).

Robert Oliveri (Kevin)

'Edward Scissorhands': Where Are They Now? (6)

Kevin, Peg's youngest child, is much more excited than his sister about the arrival of Edward Scissorhands. He befriends him almost immediately. Edward later pushes Kevin out of the way of a drunk driver, but cuts his face in the process, giving the neighborhood yet another misguided reason to dislike Edward.

Robert Oliveri's acting days ended soon after Edward Scissorhands. His last major role was in 1992's Honey I Blew Up the Kid. He has since been successful in avoiding the public eye, although he's rumored to be living in Florida with his wife and children.

07of 14

Conchata Ferrell (Helen)

'Edward Scissorhands': Where Are They Now? (7)

Conchata Ferrell's role as Helen in Edward Scissorhands wasn't necessarily a substantial one, but the nosy neighbor definitely left an impression on fans, particularly with her red hair rolled tightly into curlers.

Fans may recognize Ferrell from the 12 years she spent as Berta on Two and a Half Men, the only woman who could keep Charlie (Charlie Sheen) in check. She also did voice work on Frankenweenie (2012), among other shows and films, and appeared in films like True Romance (1993), Erin Brockovich (2000), and Mr. Deeds (2002). Ferrell died in 2020 at the age of 77.

Caroline Aaron (Marge)

'Edward Scissorhands': Where Are They Now? (8)

Marge is another nosy neighbor whose tune quickly changes in response to Edward. At first, she's curious about him, but her opinion shifts from interest to fear along with the rest of the neighborhood.

Caroline Aaron has made appearances on a bevy of popular television shows, including Sex and the City, Frasier, Judging Amy, 7th Heaven, Malcolm in the Middle, and Grey's Anatomy. Her most popular roles include her turn as Marilyn Mooney in 2004's Cellular and Annie Schmidt in both 21 Jump Street (2012) and 22 Jump Street (2014). In the late-2010s, she became a regular on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, earning two Screen Actors Guild awards along with the rest of the ensemble, and in the 2020s, she appeared in The Grotto (2022) and Theater Camp (2023), among other titles.

Dick Anthony Williams (Officer Allen)

'Edward Scissorhands': Where Are They Now? (9)

Officer Allen is the neighborhood cop who recognizes that Edward isn't so bad and takes pity on him.

Many of Williams' biggest movies hit theaters before Edward Scissorhands, including Dog Day Afternoon (1975), The Deep (1977), and The Jerk (1979). After his role as Officer Allen, he appeared on Homefront as Abe in the early-'90s, and made appearances on L.A. Law, The X-Files, and The Larry Sanders Show throughout the decade. He died in California in 2012 at the age of 77.

10of 14

O-Lan Jones (Esmeralda)

'Edward Scissorhands': Where Are They Now? (10)

Esmerelda is a religious zealot who isn't a fan of Edward from the first time he stepped foot into the neighborhood.

O-Lan Jones has had other acting roles since 1990, including parts in Natural Born Killers (1994), Mars Attacks! (1996), and The Truman Show (1998). Her talents also lie, however, in the fields of composing and writing, operating as the artistic director for Overtone Industries.

11of 14

Vincent Price (The Inventor)

'Edward Scissorhands': Where Are They Now? (11)

The inventor who created Edward never intended to leave him with scissors instead of traditional fingers. The kind old man suddenly falls to the ground and dies before he can give Edward his hands.

Edward Scissorhands was one of Vincent Price's final roles. He appeared in two TV movies and lent his voice to The Princess and the Cobbler before he died in California at the age of 82 in 1993. His biggest projects took place long before Edward Scissorhands, including House of Wax (1953), The Fly (1958), House of Usher (1960), and The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971).

12of 14

Alan Arkin (Bill)

'Edward Scissorhands': Where Are They Now? (12)

Bill Bogg, Peg's husband, is pretty amiable when his wife unexpectedly brings home a young man with scissors for hands. He becomes fond of Edward early on, stepping into a fatherly role and pleading with the mob that's out for Edward's demise.

Alan Arkin does it all. In addition to acting, he directs, produces, writes, and sings. His best-known roles after Edward Scissorhands include turns in Gattaca (1997), America's Sweethearts (2001), Little Miss Sunshine (2006)—for which he won an Oscar—Get Smart (2008), and Argo (2012). He also voiced J.D. Salinger for Netflix's BoJack Horseman and starred alongside Michael Douglas on The Kominsky Method.

13of 14

Susan Blommaert (Tinka)

'Edward Scissorhands': Where Are They Now? (13)

Tinka is yet another one of the women in the background of the neighborhood, expressing surprise when Edward trims the shrubbery in one afternoon.

After Edward Scissorhands, Blommaert continued her big-screen career with roles in Mousehunt (1997), United 93 (2006), Doubt (2008), Inside Llewyn Davis (2013), and John Wick: Chapter 3—Parabellum (2019). She also hit TV, playing a nurse on Louie, Mr. Kaplan on The Blacklist, and Roberta on Partner Track.

14of 14

John Davidson (Host)

'Edward Scissorhands': Where Are They Now? (14)

As a real life game show host, John Davidson's role on Edward Scissorhands wasn't much of a stretch.

Davidson is best known for hosting numerous shows, including Hollywood Squares, The $25,000 Pyramid, and That's Incredible! He has also starred as the Wizard of Oz in the national tour of Wicked.
